Overcoming Claustrophobia During Cancer Treatment
Ron Eslinger, RN, CRNA, APN, MA, BCH, CMI, FNGH, Captain USN NC Retired
Tim who had throat cancer was scheduled for Proton Therapy. He has claustrophobia and his fear of the Mask which is molded to the face and then used to hold the head still by bolting it to the table was so scary for him that he was ready to cancel his treatments.
He found my office, Healthy Visions Hypnosis, through a web search. Tim and his wife made an appointment and was agreeable to my videotaping the sessions. This video documentation of his use of hypnosis to overcome his fear is a testimony of how clinical hypnosis and self-hypnosis is a valuable adjunct to healthcare providers.
This was a unique encounter between the hypnotist, Ron Eslinger and Tim because in 2011 I, Ron Eslinger was diagnosed with a grade three cancer at the base of my tongue and had to be molded and wear the same type mask myself for radiation therapy. The mask in the video is my souvenir as a cancer survivor.
