Conference Objectives:
 
 · List the six stages of hypnosis.

· Review research of hypnosis in anesthesia.

· Describe the outcomes of hypnosis as an adjunct to surgery.

· List the undesirable outcomes of stress prior to surgery

· List the benefits of hypnosis for pain management

· Practice self-hypnosis

· List the glands of the Limbic System

· Describe how hypnosis affects the Limbic System

· Explain the history of hypnosis in anesthesia and surgery.

· List the words that enhance a positive outcome in ER, OR, PACU

· Experience hypnosis

· Learn the importance of suggestion during anesthesia.

· Outline the differences between a service and a teaching mission

· Find information about specific mission trips

· Define the basic considerations for taking supplies overseas

· Define the issues of cultural shock that a new volunteer faces

· List some of the major points in the history of medicine

· Learn the history of hypnosis with children.

· Describe the materials used for early hip replacements

· Describe the signs of a possible difficult airway

· Review techniques for dealing with the difficult airway

· Describe signs and symptoms of partial and complete airway obstruction.

· Discuss the differences between minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia

· State 4 objectives/goals of sedation.

· Identify your institution’s policy regarding care of the patient undergoing sedation.

· Demonstrate care for the patient during pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure phases of sedation.

· Discuss antidotes (dosage, side effects, indications) for commonly used drugs with age-specific

· List the drugs, routes, and dosages for the drugs commonly used in moderate sedation.

· Describe the controversies of using Propofol & Ketamine

· Document clearly, completely, and according to established standards, policies and instructions.

· Administer moderate sedation safely.

Suzanne Brown, CRNA, CH staff nurse anesthetist and special projects coordinator for Kaiser-Permanente Health Care Systemin Portland, Oregon. She has been instrumental as the Pain Clinic hypnotist. She is an internationally renowned speaker who has presented for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists many times. Her overseas volunteer work has made her a household name in that arena.

Captain, United States Navy, Retired-Owner Healthy Visions Wellness Center, Oak Ridge, TN. Past President, Virginia Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Voted best presenter National Guild of Hypnotists. International recognized speaker and author.

Ron is an internationally renowned lecturer and teacher to Nursing, Anesthesia, Medical and Hypnosis Organizations. He writes a monthly article on wellness for the Anderson County Visions Magazine and is published in a number of professional journals, books, CDs and DVDs.
